Steve Holland of SJH Projects was invited to take two back-to-back assemblies at Wilsthorpe Community School in Long Eaton.
The aim of the presentations was to highlight to pupils that science is not necessarily all about white lab coats and test tubes but can be more exciting and dynamic. The extensive library of photos and videos built up over years of explosive and ballistic tests was employed for maximum effect.
As well as showing some of the more interesting avenues down which an understanding of science might take them, the point was emphasised that their classroom experiments at school followed exactly the same principles and were of fundamental importance.
A fun element was added with ‘volunteers’ trying out an NP Aerospace EOD suit and cold weather clothing tested for use in the Antarctic.
The assemblies were well received by pupils and staff. If just a couple of pupils are convinced to pursue science more actively in their GCSE options the exercise will have been well worthwhile.
