Coldest Journey Team Return

Coldest Journey, Caterpillar crevasse

The Coldest Journey team have now all returned to the UK after the first ever attempt to cross Antarctica in Winter. In the end the need to shuttle part loads over unexplored crevasse fields was too much for the fuel budget.

The decision was made as the point was reached at which there would have not have been sufficient fuel available to complete the crossing. Still in the middle of previously unmarked crevasse fields, the team saw out the winter continuing with the extensive science programme. The return of daylight provided the opportunity to retrace their route back to the Belgian base from which the team were flown out.

The bulk of their heavy equipment will come out by ship in the Spring when the ice has reduced enough to allow the supply ship to reach the ice shelf proper.

On the 27th November five of the team were presented and answered a few questions at the Royal Geographical Society in London. The event underway was the annual fundraising lecture for the Transglobe Expedition Trust.
