SJH Projects has collaborated with the ‘Imperial Blast’ to assess the suitability of the Enhanced Frangible Surrogate Lower Limb (EFSLL) for use in comparing protective measures for vehicle IED protection.
The EFSLL is a NATO approved tool for assessing landmine protective footwear. Logic dictates that it should have a good degree of efficacy for investigating systems to mitigate lower limb injuries in under vehicle blast events.
Imperial College, London are investigating this field and forces were joined to compare the benefits of the EFSLL to the more traditional Hybrid III leg and newer Mil-LX mechanical limbs. All of these would then be compared to cadaveric data for validation purposes.
The first tests performed at ‘onset of injury threshold levels’ have been encouraging both in terms of measured data and clinical assessment. No clinical assessment is possible with the mechanical limbs.
The next stage will be to increase the loading level and move into a zone in which significant injury should be apparent.
