On the 5th of December, Steve Holland visited the Scott Polar Research Institute in Cambridge to provide some technical support.
Sir Ranulph Fiennes had recently donated one of the Polar Sleds produced for his record setting attempts to reach the North Pole unsupported.
The Polar Sleds were designed by BAe Space Systems in Stevenage and when there Steve Holland was the project manager. What the SPRI needed was some technical input on the design and construction of the sleds. Thnakfully, after much searching through storage boxes, Steve nmanaged to find a document he wrote at the time.
This document, predating word processors will now be scanned by the SPRI for their future use. Whilst waiting for this the document is being kept in the secure vault along with original materials from Scott and Shackleton – an honour indeed.
The SPRI team were most welcoming and kindly conducted a tour of their archive and environmentally controlled storage areas.
